Sample groups: one group of children with mental development retardation and a group of children with autistic disorder. These experiments showed that in particular the children with autistic disorder tend to respond correctly to the task related to understanding the emotions of pleasure and sadness (in others and oneself). This is despite responding incorrectly to the facial expression recognition task. It is therefore assumed that children with autistic disorder can understand the emotions of both others and themselves through empathy with the story being told. This response does not occur where there are only photos or illustrations with no story.
